What an adventure I had at Citrus Elementary School today! From the moment I stepped onto the campus, I could feel the vibrant energy buzzing through the air. With Chico Unified Superintendent, Kelly Staley, as my guide, I embarked on a journey through the heart of this charming school.
As we strolled through the playground during lunchtime, laughter and chatter filled the air. I was struck by the cozy multipurpose room and the clever covered structure outside, where students were happily enjoying their meals. Principal Shanon Payne welcomed us with warmth and enthusiasm, showcasing her deep knowledge of every nook and cranny of the school.
Citrus Elementary has a rich history, dating back to its construction in 1936 as a W.P.A. project. Over the years, it has evolved and expanded, with additions like the multipurpose room in 1956 and the Kindergarten wing in 1963-64. Today, the school is home to around 400 students, each contributing to its vibrant tapestry of diversity.
Exploring the campus, I couldn’t help but notice the ingenious use of space, despite the challenges posed by the building’s age. From “cloffices” to creatively repurposed sheds, every corner is maximized to its fullest potential. Yet, it’s clear that Citrus is bursting at the seams and in need of a little TLC.
But what truly sets Citrus apart are its innovative programs and activities. From the early morning running club, where budding athletes pound the track, to the bike program that sees fifth graders exploring the town on two wheels, the school is a hub of creativity and exploration. And let’s not forget the enchanting garden, nurtured by students and community members alike, where nature becomes a classroom.
As I wandered through classrooms brimming with eager learners, I couldn’t help but be impressed by the sense of community that permeates every aspect of Citrus Elementary. From Friday songs and skits to the Mother’s Day tea hosted by kindergarteners, every event is infused with joy and camaraderie.
In the end, my visit to Citrus Elementary left me inspired and invigorated. It’s a testament to the dedication of its staff, the support of its community, and the boundless potential of its students. And as I bid farewell, I knew that this wouldn’t be my last visit—I’ll be back to experience the magic of Citrus again and again.
